The Ronstan Bridge to Bridge Regatta defined the phrase,
Age before Beauty at Crissy Field San Francisco when it was won by Kiter, ol' man Chip "Thousand dollar bill" Wasson who narrowly passed his young nemisis, Anthony "Cha-Cha" Chavez. It was an emotional loss for young Chavez who ended up just a little high at the wrong end of the finish line, allowing Chip to tighten up the gap and pass, finishing in 16 minutes 30 seconds. "It's hard to lay the line right from such a long distance. It was nice to see someone else make a mistake this time and let me win and not lose to myself?" said Chip (mental note: try not to lose to yourself). Team Pegasus' Skiff was third.

The race may be likened to "Macrame meets Cuisine Art" since any boat is allowed to enter the pure speed, downwind race from outside the Golden Gate to below the Bay Bridge. "It's definitely my favorite race of the year", said "Cha-Cha" Chavez. Entries included 6 skiffs, 18 kites, 10 windsurfers and one huge Catamaran. Notorious speed freaks, Light Speed had trouble as their spinaker tore before the start leaving them to clean up the back of the fleet.

The Ronstan International 18' Skiff Regatta at Crissy Field San Francisco was won by Team Pegasus with 8 1st places with 2 throwouts for 8 points followed by Yandoo in 2nd with 12 points.
"Bearing away on an 18 foot skiff is one of the most difficult moves in sailing and during the second race at the windward mark, it proved to be a handful for even the best teams," said Team Pegasus Mike Martin. "Howard Hamlin, you know he has won this event two times in a row,
Everybody is trying to catch him. Howie clearly makes the fewest mistakes," added Cameron Mac Donald of Team Yandoo. Yandoo led many times as you can see in the Ooto photo above and was a close second throughout the race which continues with two races Friday, one of which is the Bridge to Bridge race from the Golden Gate to the Bay Bridge placing windsurfers, kiters and skiffs on the line at the same time with a full speed downwind start. Saturday, there will be two more races making it a total of 10 races to finish the regatta.

The Windsurfing National Championships were held this week at Crissy Field hosted by the Saint Francis Yacht Club. The SF Bay conditions offered windy and sunny conditions for the course racing, long distance and slalom race.
Windsurfing set the bar, again, the boards are the fastest course racing sailboats on the Bay. The evolution of equipment continues, allowing these saiors to sail huge distances at speeds of 20-30 knots over the course. For Seth Besse the triumphant winner, it looked like a leisurely Bay Tour. Seth gybed wide and sailed well outside the tightest course and sailed fast to win all divisions and the overall National Champion title.

The first ever US Kitesurfing National Championships were held at Crissy Field hosted by the Saint Francis Yacht Club. A series a 16 races were held over three days in typical perfect SF Bay conditions, windy, bleak, foggy and cool. Even the best quality photos of the event look black and white but that didn't cool the enthusiasm for the event.

The
Gunkhole Rally is a 100 mile event from San Francisco to Sherman Island. The traditional small boat regatta includes boats dating back to the early 1900's sailing along the nooks and hooks of the bay and delta slews. Most of the boats are designed as shallow draft traditional boats, best for landing on the sandy coves.
